Scale Without Losing Standards
The Hi 5 Youth Foundation is a Mumbai-based sports non-profit founded in 2015 that provides free basketball coaching to underprivileged boys and girls. It is one of the largest programmes of its kind in the country. Hi 5 trains more than 4,000 children every day across 35 centres in eight Indian states, with a full-time coach assigned to each centre and a structured in-house curriculum running through beginner, intermediate, advanced and elite levels under its flagship Hope Thru Hoops programme.[1][2]
Scale of that kind creates a specific problem. When a programme grows from a handful of Mumbai centres to dozens of sites spread from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh, the limiting factor stops being courts or equipment and becomes the consistency of what happens in a session. A child in a tribal residential school in Naroli should receive the same quality of coaching, in the same technical language, as a child in Andheri. That is a coach development problem before it is a player development problem.
An Appointment That Became a Partnership
In April 2024, Hi 5 appointed Tasos Traianos as Head Consultant to oversee its basketball programme. The remit was to guide and support the coaching staff, and to make sure they had the resources and the training to deliver at a standard the organisation’s ambitions demanded.[3]
Founders R Sundar and Usha Sundar framed the appointment around building a positive, high-standard coaching environment across the whole organisation. From the AETHLOS side, the attraction was the alignment: an organisation using basketball as a platform for education and life outcomes, not as an end in itself.[3]
There is an undeniable passion and determination to excel within the Hi 5 community.
What began as a single appointment has become a continuous working relationship. Hi 5 describes the collaboration as ongoing since 2024, and credits it with helping to shape the foundation’s training frameworks. The organisation positions work with internationally experienced coaches as a deliberate strategy: strengthening its basketball ecosystem through outside expertise, shared knowledge and a different perspective on familiar problems.[5]
Five Pillars of the Programme
Coach Education & Training
On-court practice paired with structured classroom sessions, so every technical decision has a reason the coach can explain and defend - built around consistency, clarity and professionalism in delivery.
Technical Development
Refining coaching methodology with the Hi 5 technical team - movement, session construction and progression, and game-realistic practice built on the Constraints-Led Approach.
Curriculum & Player Development
Deepening Hi 5’s existing multi-level curriculum with real structure. The rebuilt Intermediate curriculum was signed off by foundation leadership in 2026 and is now the working framework.
Talent Identification
A clearer, consistent way of spotting and tracking players ready to progress towards district, state and national competition, and towards the Hi 5 Academy.
Implementation & Review
Repeated in-country visits, competitive matches watched alongside training, and a six-day, 36-hour senior coach intensive in March 2026.
None of the above is a document exercise. Delivery has run through repeated in-country visits, with time spent watching competitive basketball as well as training. In March 2026, AETHLOS returned to Mumbai to run a six-day, 36-hour intensive for Hi 5’s senior coaches, combining on-court work with classroom sessions on advanced coaching technique and session delivery. A central strand was the mindset of the coach: how the organisation’s stated values get translated into day-to-day behaviour on the court. The visit also included attending the Mayor Basketball Cup, run with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, to see the players in a competitive setting.[4]
What the Numbers Look Like Now
Hi 5 reports the following across its programme, reflecting the competitive environment the coaching work supports:[1]
These are Hi 5’s organisational results, delivered by Hi 5’s own coaches and staff. AETHLOS’s contribution is upstream of them: the coach education, the technical standards and the development planning that the front-line delivery rests on.
The Multiplier Is the Point
Training one coach well changes the experience of every child that coach will ever work with, and it keeps changing it long after the consultant has flown home.
It also worked because it was built with the organisation rather than imposed on it. Hi 5 had a curriculum, an experienced technical leadership and a strong culture already in place. The role was to sharpen what existed, add international coaching methodology where it genuinely added something, and leave behind capability rather than dependence.
The Same Model, Any Scale
The same model applies to any organisation running sport at scale: national federations, school trusts, multi-site academies and charities. The components are consistent.
- Coach education designed around how coaches learn, not just what they should know
- A technical framework that gives every session a shared language
- Curriculum and long-term development planning tied to real progression points
- Talent identification that is systematic and repeatable
- Delivery on the ground, reviewed in competition, and revisited
